About

This blog is to document my year (plus?) of time trialling on my fixie in 2019.

I’m a forty something who played football and American Football until my late twenties, but did no competitive sport from then until last year when I rode my first time trial (the first of 5 club tens I rode). I’ve always ridden a bike, dabbling in MTB and road riding, but not joining a club or competing until I was 40. I decided I wanted to do my TTs on fixed because I enjoy riding the fixed, and most 10s and 25s are pretty flat, so the discipline suits the bike quite well. Also, it’s significantly easier and cheaper to obtain the right bits for a fixed/track bike than it is for a competitive TT bike.

Family and work means that I don’t have a huge amount of time to train or to race, but being based in Oxford means that there are a load of time trials nearby all summer, so that’s my aim, and I’ll document the whole process here…

I don’t have a coach, I use https://www.trainerroad.com plans and their tools to organise my training and plan races. I’m really impressed with the plans and the tools, and I love listening to their “Ask a cycling coach” podcast to learn about why they do things the way they do, and also about cycling skills, racing, and training.

I’m a member of https://www.cowleyroadcondors.cc and while I don’t do as many group rides as I might like, I think it’s a great club and I would heartily recommend them to anyone in the Oxford area who is interested in cycling. I will ride all my TTs in their colours (pink and black!), whether in club events or opens.
